From the Pastor

We came through Lent, celebrated Easter, pondered the mystery of the Resurrection, and many of us may be wondering, “What does it all mean?” Or, “What do we do now?”  I imagine the early church asked those same questions, and Christians have been asking those same questions ever since.

What does it all mean?  What are we supposed to do now that death has been conquered and the world has changed forever?  Well, first of all, I think we need to admit that the world has not changed all that much.  People still die too young, the powerful exploit the week, fear still drives our decision making.  What the resurrection proved, what the witness of some members of the early church proved, what the witness of pockets of Christians scattered across different times and places proves, is that it doesn’t have to be this way.  Death is not as strong as we thought, therefore we don’t have to be afraid, and therefore we are free.

So what are we supposed to do?  We are supposed to love one another, just as God loves us.  That means we are supposed to love one another unconditionally, right away, no matter who we are or who they are.  We are supposed to love.  We are supposed to love people from the cradle to the grave, we are supposed to love them with all our hearts, we are supposed to love, as Jesus did, with our dying breath.

Love is the thing, everything else is details.  This church might not be able to do what it used to, we don’t have the choir we used to have, we don’t have the Sunday School, or the picnics, or what have you, but that doesn’t matter, as long as we love with all we’ve got.  We can be older, we can be tired, we can let go of the activities we used to do, and as long as we still love, we are the church, and we are lights in the world.
