From the Pastor September/October 2016

As we move from Summer into Fall, we have a good news/bad news situation in our church.  The good news: We have lovely new carpeting in our sanctuary.  It was a much-needed upgrade, and it’s also symbolically fitting of the fresh new energy that we’ve been feeling in our congregation.  Energy that has come from new members and returning members and our new partnership with the First Church of Christ, Scientist.  We have also turned our finances around, and while that’s no reason to feel complacent, and while finances are not the be-all-and-end-all of the church, there is reason to feel pretty good about where we are financially.  Better, at least.

But the bad news: we are having trouble finding enough officers to fill out our slate of elders and trustees for the coming year.  I know that most people in this congregation have served, and served long, and served well, and that many people in the church are tired.  I hear that.  At the same time, we are the ones who are here right now, we are the ones who God has called to be leaders at this place and time.  It would be nice if other people joined or stepped up so that those who have already served so often and for so long could take a well earned rest, but what if no one else does?  This is what I worry about more than I worry about the budget.

We need people to step up to fill out our slate of officers.  Or: we need to shrink the numbers of officers.  Or: we need to consolidate trustees and elders (essentially, then we’d only have a session of elders).  These are all viable options.  As the moderator, I’d rather shrink and consolidate than burn people out trying beat the bushes for nominees.  In other words, I’d rather have five people who are ready, willing, and able to serve, than ten people who agree it serve if there’s nobody else that wants to do it.  Whatever option, I want people who are ready to serve with grace and enthusiasm about the work.

For my part, I can promise that session meetings are well-run, to the point, effective, and (mostly) pain-free.  Honestly, we’re out of there in less than an hour.  I understand that people are busy and you all are volunteering your time.  I respect that.  You will not sit in any three-hour meetings that go late into the night.  Most of our session meetings are over before coffee hour is over, so you’re really not giving that much more time out of your week, but you still get to be part of a team that gets things done.  Good deal.  Consider this your invitation to be part of that team.

Peace, Matt
